Utah Family Photographer: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Family Pictures

Family pictures are the best way to leave your legacy and create lasting memories that will only become more valuable with time. How do you choose the right family photographer? The most important thing to understand when choosing your Utah family photographer is to make sure they give you the highest level of customer care. There are many things to consider when getting family pictures done. Not just your outfits and location. I am going to share everything you need to know before your family pictures to make them successful!

Finding the Right Utah Family Photographer

The first step in planning your family portraits is to find the right Utah family photographer. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Look at portfolios: Look at the photographer's portfolio to make sure their style matches your vision for your family portraits.
  2. Check reviews: Read reviews from previous clients to get a sense of the experience the photographer provides.
  3. Discuss priorities for final product and art work
  4. Get to know the personality of your photographer. Who they are will be the thing they draw out of you during your session. If they are dry and serious, that will be the result of your portraits. If they are fun and playful, that will be your final result.

Choosing the Perfect Location

Utah is full of stunning locations that make great backdrops for family portraits. Here are some things to consider when choosing a location:

  1. Consider the season: Depending on the time of year, some locations may be more crowded or less accessible due to weather.
  2. Think about your family’s personality: Choose a location that reflects your family’s personality and interests.
  3. Consider lighting: The time of day and location can greatly impact the lighting for your photos, so choose a location with good natural light.
  4. Take into consideration your home decor. If your home is decorated in blues and whites and you plan to hang your portraits as art in your home you wouldn't want to shoot in red and orange leaves.

Planning Your Outfits

What you wear for your family portraits can greatly impact the overall look and feel of the photos. Here are some tips for choosing outfits for your family pictures:

  1. Coordinate, but don’t match: Choose colors and patterns that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy.
  2. Consider the location: Choose outfits that fit the location and the season.
  3. Keep it timeless: You want your family portraits to look great for years to come, so avoid trends and opt for classic styles.
  4. Stay away from loud patterns and logos.
  5. Baggy is not better to hide weight. Baggy clothing adds weight to you. Proper lighting and angles will create a more slimming figure, not excess cloth. Be sure to be candid with your photographer what you are self conscious about.

Preparing Your Family

Getting ready for family portraits can be a bit stressful, especially if you have young children. Here are some tips for preparing your family for family portraaits:

  1. Get plenty of rest: Make sure everyone gets a good night’s sleep before the photo session.
  2. Plan ahead: Pack any necessary items, such as snacks or toys for young children. I have found it's best to leave special toys at home, unless you want them in your picture. They cause more temper tantrums than they do smiles. Do not bring fish crackers or anything of the like. They leave crumbs and turn mouths orange. Fruit snacks are also a big no-no. They take forever to chew and typically your child will want the full pack. Smarties are a great treat (I bring them to every shoot with small children.) They dissolve, don't leave residue, make a crying child at least pucker and can be enjoyed quickly!
  3. Relax and have fun. Leave the stress at home. It's the photographers job to stress. That's why you are paying them.
  4. Feed your family an hour before the portrait session. Nobody likes to be hangry. It's best to feed your kids and then get them dressed so they don't spill on their outfits.
  5. Introduce the outfits to your family a week before the photo session. This gives everyone time to complain and be annoyed before go time. Chances are someone will have some issue with something. This will give you time to either help your family member get accustomed to the idea of their outfit or time to change things up.

Family portraits are a wonderful way to capture memories and create lasting images. By finding the right Utah family photographer, choosing the perfect location, planning your outfits, and preparing your family, you can ensure that your family portraits turn out beautifully. Remember to relax and have fun, and enjoy the experience of creating memories with your loved ones.
